Robust vaginal colonization of macaques with a novel vaginally disintegrating tablet containing a live biotherapeutic product to prevent HIV infection in women.

Synopsis: Lactobacillus jensenii engineered to secrete modified cyanovirin-N was formulated as a vaginally disintegrating tablet and tested in a macaque vaginal colonization model. The tablets were stable up to 1 year at 25ºC and bioactive in vivo. When administered intravaginally to macaques, colonization with the tablets was observed at levels similar to using the freshly cultured bacteria.
